Wheehoo! We have less than a week of official school to do. That means end-of-year paperwork and planning for next year for me. Scramble time! 🙂 But not so much scramble as to keep me from posting. (Woohoo for planning ahead!) A lovely bunch of spring flowers for K.L. Schwengel, our hostess.
Math = 1st digit of date + 2nd digit of date + 1st digit of year = 2 + 7 + 2 = 13 paragraphs
Arvid 5’6″, dark copper skin, long brown hair, brown eyes, athletic build.
Taiamuk 6’3″, long red hair, gray eyes, a multitude of freckles, numerous scars, muscles a la Jackie Chan. Notable scars include three stab wounds on his right side and a long, horizontal gash across his chest. Owns one piece of clothing: trousers.
- This snippet is a continuation of last week’s post, Addled Mind, which is a continuation of Eyeful.
- It’s still winter and they’re still stuck trying to survive it together.
- Arvid has learned to respect Tai and appreciate his fighting instruction. During one of their sparring matches, he slammed into a tree and sustained some injuries.
- Arvid has now treated those injuries and applied some medicine to numb the pain and help Tai sleep. In the meantime, his head is resting on her lap.
- First draft.
She leaned back. “Tai, you need to sleep.” She pushed his hand away, dropped her head to one side, and pretended to snore. “Sleep.”
He laughed and started playing with her hair again. “No suh-leep.” His other hand moved to her waist to give her a small tug toward him.
“That medicine is addling your mind.” It happened sometimes with slumberbark, people getting stupid. She removed his hand from her waist but let him keep messing with her hair as a compromise, like giving a baby his favorite blanket to keep him from crying over not being allowed to play with a forbidden object.
He shook his head. “Doo ay’adpikvud.”
She took it to mean, “I don’t understand.”
“You eat.” She tapped his chest. “You.” Then held the spoon up to her lips. “Eat. Then,” she lolled her head to one side and snored, “sleep.”
He touched all five fingers to his lips. “Eat. Ehsh.”
He closed his eyes. “Suh-leep. Vehg.”
“Vehg. Sleep.” She lifted the spoon again. “But stay awake long enough to eat.”
Fingers twined through a lock of her hair, he opened dilated eyes and brushed the thumb of his free hand along her jaw. “No suh-leep.”
“And no more slumberbark for you.” She thrust the spoon toward his mouth, ready to smash it into closed lips if he didn’t react fast enough.
He did, of course, and she managed to feed him a few bites before the medicine knocked him out. Only after she ate her own stew and added logs to keep the fire going through the night, Arvid realized he still wore no trousers. She considered letting him sleep alone, but the howling wind outside convinced her to stow propriety for one night. Cheeks burning, again, she turned her back to him and tried not to think.
