Official school is over. It is now time for unofficial school (because we homeschool and the lessons never stop). And all the children said YIPPEE! 😀 I hope you northern hemisphere people are finally getting some nice weather and I hope you southern hemisphere people are having a cozy winter. 🙂 I’m betting our wonderful hostess K.L Schwengel’s little lambies are getting big by now. Maybe if we all smile real pretty for her, she’ll show us more pictures as soon as she has a chance. 😀 (Did you see all my smileys, Kathi? Here’s another one just in case. 🙂 )

Math = month + date + 1st digit of year + last digit of year = 6 + 3 + 2 + 5 = 16 paragraphs

Character descriptions:

Arvid 5’6″, dark copper skin, long brown hair, brown eyes, athletic build.

Taiamuk 6’3″, long red hair, gray eyes, a multitude of freckles, numerous scars, muscles a la Jackie Chan. Notable scars include three stab wounds on his right side and a long, horizontal gash across his chest. Owns one piece of clothing: trousers.

Necessary Context:

  • This snippet is a continuation of last week’s post, and the last slice of this particular scene. The other slices are here, here, and here if you want them.
  • It’s still winter and they’re still stuck trying to survive it together.
  • Arvid has learned to respect Tai and appreciate his fighting instruction. During one of their sparring matches, he slammed into a tree and sustained some injuries.
  • Arvid has now treated those injuries and applied some medicine. It helped Tai fall asleep, but not before Arvid noticed some odd side-effects of the medicine.

Only after she ate her own stew and added logs to keep the fire going through the night, Arvid realized he still wore no trousers. She considered letting him sleep alone, but the howling wind outside convinced her to stow propriety for one night. Cheeks burning, again, she turned her back to him and tried not to think.

Morning dawned and Arvid still stared at the fire with wide-open eyes. Tai stirred behind her. The chill of the night made leaving the warmth of the bedroll before letting the sun warm the air a foolish idea. The last of the logs she piled on the fire caught and she estimated another hour before moving became a good option. In the meantime, Tai’s closeness made life awkward and sleep elusive.

He stirred. “Ayrvid?”

“Yes?” Her voice came out a croak, as tired as she after her sleepless night.

She felt him prop himself on his uninjured elbow. “Ru’nut ush ay.” He pressed his fingers into her chin to turn her head toward him. “Ru’nut ush ay. Ru,” he tapped her shoulder, “nut,” pointed to his eyes, “ush ay,” and tapped his chest.

“Look at you?” She sorted his words, trying to get them in the right order. If she repeated them in the same order, she’d be reversing his meaning, so she tried switching them around. “Ush ru ay nut?”

His lips quirked on one side. “Ay’nut ush ru” he corrected. Before she repeated the lesson, he went on. “Ay’nay ru.”

She shook her head. “I don’t understand. Doo ay’ad… ad…”

“Adpikvud.”

“Yes. That. I think.”

“Ay’pu’n thoo ru.” He bent toward her, eyes closed.

He was acting like Kiano with Oya again. She rolled into the cold air and started shivering before she got one pace away. Hopefully the slumberbark explained the behavior, but whether it did or not, she wanted it fixed.

Tai lifted further on his elbow. “Ayrvid, ru’fehshik. Doo ay’teh’n loofev ru’pu eadehfayd doo ru’teh’n zad, ay’zad shat chav ush ru id nirdchach av’ adpikvud toof.” He waved her to return. “Ru’tam.”

The chill worked its way to her bones. She scrambled back to her place beside him. He pulled her close and tucked her head against his chest until she stopped shivering.

When she gained control of her limbs, she held up her prize. “Trousers.”

Tai snorted. With much awkward wriggling and shuffling, he got them on under the blanket. A decent amount of space reestablished between them, Arvid fell asleep and stayed that way until midday.
